DESCRIPTION:These are dangerous times of global ecological overshoot\, abuse of power and system collapse. Join us this month on a contemplative journey through some relevant themes.  Through slides\, readings\, poems\, and questions\, we will open doorways of power awareness.  First the doorway of dark predicament\, then the doorways of complicated hope\, awe\, re-orienting\, and guidance for moving forward.  How can our power-conscious understandings  help us to orient and act powerfully toward the common good?  Led by Cedar Barstow using her personal selection of inspiring and thought-provoking readings and resources.  There will be time for self-reflection and then sharing at the end of the hour. \n  \nDr. Cedar Barstow \n \nDr. Cedar Barstow is the founder and executive director emerita of The Right Use of Power Institute. She is a consultant and teacher on ethics and ethical issues. She has been designing\, developing\, and teaching this approach since 1994. Cedar’s background includes 30 years as a psychotherapist and 25 years as a teacher. She is the author of books and articles on ethics\, counseling with elders\, women and independence\, and psychotherapy and spirituality. Cedar is also a Hakomi Experiential Psychology Trainer and a member of the Naropa University Adjunct Faculty.

Driven by her core values of curiosity\, courage\, and connection\, Amanda is adept at putting things together in new ways\, creating visuals that help make learning more accessible\, and communicating complex ideas in simple ways. \nAmanda has a commitment to be courageous in the service of reducing and repairing harm in relationship and promoting the cultural shift toward power-and-equity consciousness\, conflict positivity and conflict competency. \nAt the core of her academic and personal passion is the advancement in understanding social power dynamics and deepening the personal and collective uses of power in the world with wisdom and compassion. \nHer doctoral dissertation focused on the dynamics of shame and power in the justice system and she continues to develop theoretical models in the intrapersonal and interpersonal experiences of power dynamics\, including the integration of neurobiology\, contemplative practices and restorative practices as they relate to power differentials. \n  \nDau Windwater \n \nDau (they/them) is a contemplative practitioner\, systems thinker\, and lover of the living world. They bring pragmatism from a past career in bookkeeping and a big heart from their deeper interest in community and belonging. Through Dau’s work\, they foster the awareness and exploration of power and paradox in order to empower and encourage multicultural understanding. As a facilitator\, their style is infused with ritual\, reflection\, and space to experience the relationship between our inner and outer landscapes. \n  \nFarzin Farzad \n \nFarzin Farzad is an Organizational Justice practitioner with experience in higher education\, trade associations\, local government\, and the private sector. Holding two master’s degrees in international affairs and diplomacy as well as a certificate in conflict resolution skills\, Farzin leverages his unique academic background\, extensive travel experience\, and experiential knowledge to provide comprehensive\, thought-provoking local and global approaches to his work. \nIn addition to training and education programs\, Farzin is a seasoned project manager with expertise in developing strategies that build equitable workplace environments and government services\, as well as build internal capacity. \nFarzin is the founder of Critical Equity Consulting\, LLC\, a boutique Organizational Justice consulting firm focused on helping organizations rebuild with a primary focus on creating equitable outcomes and seeking justice. \n  \nVeronica Borgonovi \n \nVeronica (she/her) is a seasoned organizational and project leader\, manager\, mentor\, and coach\, with experience supporting over 40 client projects in management and social sector consulting across multiple countries. She continues to guide a multi-year effort to transform organizational culture around equity and inclusion across multiple geographies\, and is experienced in strategy development\, evaluation and learning\, facilitation\, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. \nShe is a certified coach through Leadership That Works\, a graduate of Right Use of Power Institute’s teacher training\, and a Qualified Administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory. She is also an experienced meditator and currently studying the application of Buddhist contemplative psychology toward psychosocial change efforts.

DESCRIPTION:In a time when we seem to be hearing more about misuses and abuses of power than about power used for the common good\, we want to shine a light on people who are using their power wisely and well. In a time when\, wanting to avoid causing harm\, people unconsciously misuse power by disowning it\, we want to illuminate the good that power can bring. In a time when the shadow of power overwhelms and distresses\, we want to get more and more clear about the perils and pitfalls of power.  This will allow us to become increasingly self-aware and avoid the tendencies to self-centeredness\, greed\, need for control and adulation\, and loss of empathy that so often accompany increasing access to power. \n  \nIn this hour together\, we will have a chance to listen and to talk with people in high role-power positions who are using their power well and shaping it for good.  Let’s see what they have to say about being tempted and tested\, how they have responded\, and what they’ve learned about power.   In contrast to when power is abused\, when power is used humbly and well\, we hardly notice\,  Things are smooth\, conflicts get handled\, mistakes learned from\, and multiple people get acknowledged. \n  \nIn further announcements about this Thought-Leader program\, we will be letting you know who our guests will be.

To become an authentic leader involves expanding self-awareness and presence\, cultivating good communication skills and leading with both vulnerability and courage. However\, power dynamics can sometimes derail leaders’ best of intentions and create awkward moments that erode trust. \nIntegrating Right Use of PowerTM concepts and practices into your leadership approach will strengthen your ability to lead with integrity and empathy by enhancing access to your personal power and acknowledging the impact that role and status power have in all of our interactions. \nWe will explore the 5 types of power in the context of Authentic Leadership—helping you understand the power you have and how to wield it skillfully with empathy and compassion. Sari’s mission has been to take the D & I discussions to the next level including the less visible aspects of diversity that we all share. Sari’s book on ”Leading multiplicity – Leader’s self-awareness as it’s core” (in Finnish) was published in 2016.\n\nSari is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) certified by ICF (International Coaching Federation)\, Certified Business Coach Master\, and Trainer/Mentor of Coaching & Leadership skills. Sari also holds certifications as a WholeBody Focusing Trainer and as a Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition.\n\nSari is always looking for new concepts and modalities to make her training and coaching more impactful. DESCRIPTION:Technology\, like power\, is neutral.  It is how we use it that determines when it is harmful or helpful.  And\, like most things\, social media is a strong mixture of both.  Our time will begin with a recorded conversation between Cedar and Batia\, a high school senior\, talking about her and her friends’ perspective and experience with social media–both the positives and the negatives for them as teenagers.  We will use this conversation to talk further about the challenges of distraction and addictiveness and ways to work with these in a power-conscious way.  What awareness\, strategies\, skills can we share with each other?\n\n\nCedar Barstow and Batia Rose Wilson \n \nCedar Barstow is the founder and executive director emerita of Right Use of Power Institute. She has had a long interest in the power of the internet and social media–and how it impacts our sense of personal power in relationships\, how it impacts our use of time\, and how it impacts our understanding of truth and reality. She is concerned for herself and for the next generations. Batia Rose Wilson is entering her senior year in high school and has been engaging with social media and focusing on how to use it in healthy\, life-affirming ways. In her private practice\, Warrior Wisdom\, Ki works with individuals and people in intimate relationships of all kinds who want to heal relationally by learning how to turn towards inner and outer conflict whenever possible with slowness\, curiosity\, kindness\, and the intention to hold that multiple truths are possible and probable. She also offers a 12-week course which builds these skills and is rooted in the integration of The Right Use of PowerTM\, Nonviolent Communication\, and Internal Family Systems\, entitled “Language for the Open-Hearted Warrior.” \n \nKi is passionate about co-creating beloved community with others\, understanding the integral role this plays in transformational healing of intrapersonal\, interpersonal and systemic suffering. DESCRIPTION:The Power and Equity Challenge Retreat is a 7-day\, in-person retreat located at the beautiful Charis Mandala Retreat Center near Des Moines\, New Mexico (USA). \nThis retreat is for those who have attended the Right Use of Power™ Core Training and want to develop their power-and-equity consciousness with a deep dive into status\, collective\, and systemic power. \nThere will be space and intentional opportunities for both self-care and collective-care.
