Power With Heart
As people in the helping professions—therapists, coaches, clergy, spiritual leaders, we have
much power and influence with our clients/patients/parishioners. Since we don’t get much if
any training in understanding power, we can easily make mistakes and cause unintended harm.
Power is complex. Come join other practitioners who care about how they use their power.
- Understand the relational dynamics of the power differential and its impacts on clients.
- Learn what happens in your perception of yourself and other’s perception of you when
you have increased power. - Strengthen your personal power and discover your power profile.
- Explore the shadow aspects of power.
- Put the four dimensions of power to practical use.
- Become feedback-seeking and build trust.
- Reframe ethics as being in right relationship with power.
- Try on a practice for resolving and repairing relationship rifts.
This is an embodied ethics course—ethics from the inside out instead of the rule-side in.
Find out how to say YES to your power so that you can use it wisely and well.
Course is engaging—through practices, talks, discussion
What others have said:
“My whole idea of professional ethics was broadened and deepened through seeing ethics in the
larger context of right relationship with power. Personally, I studied my relationship with
power, my wounds around power, and my habits of using power. This was engaging, surprising,
and helpful. I now have an increased awareness of the more subtle ways in which power and
influence are exercised.” Camille Leaver, psychotherapist

Dr. Cedar Barstow
RUPI Founder & Co-Executive Director
Cedar has been passionate about working with issues of power and ethics for 25 years. She believes that embodied learning—learning from the inside out—is both the most engaging and the most effective way of learning. She has been surprised at how many experiential processes can be adapted to virtual formatting. She loves teaching, developing programs, and helping to guide the growth and reach of RUPI. One of RUPI’s foci for the next few years is increasing diversity and contributing to social justice—which, of course, is a right use of power. She is also a Trainer with the Hakomi Mindful Somatic Therapy organization. She lives with her husband, Ren, in a co-op home in Boulder, CO.
